We have to get real. Computers happen to break down, and they need trained people to come and fix them. It is as simple as when people get sick, and they need medical personnel to alleviate the illness. Or, when the water pipe breaks, you call the plumber to rush down to the premises to take care of the problem. With computers, dedicated technicians will
diagnose and fix issues dealing with hardware, software, and related technology packages. So, what does it take to become a computer technician?
Getting into computer-repair is not a difficult thing to do. Interested individuals have many choices to gain valuable skills that can help them in their journey to learn technology-related subjects. They can go to trade schools / boot-camps, where they could receive lessons with theories, and practical labs to practice their knowledge. Or, they could become self-taught, where they learn by themselves, using accessible resources such as books, and videos.
Aspiring computer technicians should accustom themselves to opening up computer cases, where they will find things like motherboards, central processing units, hard-drives, and power supplies. Also, they should be able to recognize related ports, such as USB, VGA, HDMI, and audio. In order to handle the hardware side of the computer, technicians must have related tools of the trade, such as screwdrivers (Phillips and Flathead), tweezers, and pliers, as well as multimeters to diagnose electrical issues.
On the software side of things, computer technicians must be knowledgeable in the major operating systems. The most notable ones are Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and the different flavors of Linux. It should be noted that Windows comes pre-installed in the majority of personal computers throughout the whole world, so the majority of issues will come from this system. Regardless, expert technicians should be able to provide systems-administration duties for all operating-systems.
The rest of the software support will come from productivity software, such as that coming from Microsoft Office, which includes a word-processing program (Microsoft Word) and spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel). User request will include creating, editing, and saving files.
Besides training, aspiring computer technicians should look for ways to validate their knowledge. One of the best ways to do that is by obtaining industry-recognized certifications. The most recognize one is the CompTIA A+, which tests for basic knowledge of computer support. This certification requires the passing of two exams that include multiple-choice questions, as well as performance-based scenarios.
People that want to get into computer-repair must ask themselves why they want to get into this career. It could be an exciting prospect to be able to utilize one’s technical skills to help others in their most dire need. From helping small-business users to enterprise environments, there are new challenges that arise every day.
